Mopar Charging System MOPAR CHARGING SYSTEM - 1970 AND LATER. In 1970 Mopar switched from an analog type voltage regulator to a transistorized regulator. The basic circuit, shown in Diagram #2, is completely different. Before the voltage regulator monitored the (+) ignition voltage and opened/closed the (+) field circuit as needed to maintain a steady voltage. The 1970 design, instead, monitored the (+) field voltage and open/closed the (-) ground field as needed to maintain a steady voltage.

Classic Mopar High Amp Alternator Wiring Upgrade Description
Improved Wiring for older Mopars After studying the wiring diagrams, I discovered that (per the Dodge Factory Service Manual) a 35 amp was standard, while a 60 amp “heavy duty” alternator was optional - and the wiring was different for that option. Nowadays, 60 amps would be small and 100 amps is common. I have been running a 60 amp alternator for about 8 years now.

Hot Rods Mopar didn't use a diode because they had an ammeter, unlike inferior makes that use a cheap idiot light. With an idiot light you may need a diode. Just get the Mopar electronic regulator. Only 2 wires and the last time I bought one they were only $12 maybe a little more now. Here is a wiring diagram for any car that used that alternator.
